Meet the Team: Digital Learning

Our digital learning team is all about making science education accessible to everyone in our community.

They’ve worked hard to make sure our educational resources, videos, and workshops meet the needs of all learners, offering creative and engaging ways to explore science, no matter where you are.

Where Can I Find Free Educational STEM Resources?

Our educational resources offer a wide variety of materials designed to make STEM education fun and accessible.

Created by experts, these resources are made to engage learners of all ages—and they’re always free!

Our Curiosity at Home printable activity guides are for English and Spanish learners to explore scientific concepts. They include hands-on experiments, creative projects, and thought-provoking challenges that make science fun and accessible.

Our YouTube library covers a wide array of topics, tailored to different audiences.

  • Science Activities: Follow-along activities designed for learning from anywhere, exploring a mix of STEM subjects.
  • Career Corner: Insights into various STEM careers, featuring profiles and paths of professionals in the field.
  • Deeper Learning: Lectures and science presentations intended for adult audiences to discuss and delve into current science topics.
  • Behind the Scenes: A look at what’s happening behind the scenes at Pacific Science Center, offering a glimpse into our daily operations and special projects.

What are Digital Discovery Workshops?

Digital Discovery Workshops (DDWs) are live, online programs led by PacSci’s Digital Learning educators, bringing exciting science experiences directly to students.

These workshops feature real-time demonstrations, specimen close-ups, and interactive activities. From touring the solar system in a virtual planetarium to discovering animal adaptations observing real skulls, teeth and fur, our programs cover a range of STEM topics.

Each 40-minute workshop can host up to 50 learners and includes a Teacher Toolkit with additional resources like reading lists, activity guides, and STEM videos to extend learning.

DDWs can stand alone as an educational program or be paired with other PacSci offerings, such as Science on Wheels or field trips. When paired with these experiences, DDWs are a great way to extend learning beyond a single event, providing a deeper and more comprehensive educational experience.

Meet Mary (she/her), Digital Learning Specialist

With a background in Environmental Education and a passion for video editing, Mary has combined her skills to create engaging digital content. Her love for outdoor education and enthusiasm for YouTube led her to a career in digital learning.

A cherished memory with the Digital Learning team is her pet crawfish, which she adopted after a Wetlands DDW session. During these sessions, pond samples are collected, and invasive species like the Rusty Crawfish cannot be returned to the water. Instead of letting it be discarded, Mary chose to take the crawfish home, embracing her dedication to wildlife conservation.

Mary’s favorite tool is her phone, prized for its immediate access to information. She uses it to identify plants and animals and capture moments with her camera.

If she could host any celebrity guest for a video interview, she’d choose Taylor Swift to discuss the technology behind her tours, or the late Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

Meet Troy (he/him), Education Program Coordinator

Troy’s love for animals started early, but after volunteering at the Oregon Zoo, he found his passion in sharing science with others. This led him to a small estuary science museum and eventually PacSci, where he’s spent the last eight years delivering programs for Camps for Curious Minds, Science Engagement, and Digital Learning.

Troy is dedicated to making science engaging and accessible to all. He has a passion for teaching about space, despite supernovae and black holes terrifying him as a child. Now Troy loves interpreting the drama and enormity of space science for the public.

He is currently working on developing content for our 60 Minutes in Space members-only planetarium series, both writing the program and using a planetarium-specific scripting language to pre-program animations into the show.

Troy’s first love remains zoology, and if he could host a digital workshop with anyone, it would be Jane Goodall—or a dog. In his free time, he enjoys video games, walking with friends, painting, and kayaking, recently experiencing bioluminescence on a trip to San Juan Island.

Continuous Innovation and Adaptation

Our Digital Learning Team is made up of dedicated educators and tech experts who are always working together. They show our commitment to innovation and accessibility by using new technologies to create engaging and interactive learning experiences for all.

In our effort towards making science education accessible to all. Our Digital Discovery Workshops (DDWs) are offered free to qualifying low-income groups.

This vital work is made possible by our generous partners, who help ensure that financial barriers don’t prevent access to quality science education. Also, our Curiosity at Home and YouTube resources are always available at no cost, providing free educational materials to everyone.
