PacSci’s Path to Sustainability

As we celebrate Earth Day, it’s an opportune moment to reflect on our commitment to sustainability at Pacific Science Center.

Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword for us—it’s a principle ingrained in every aspect of our operations. We strive to make environmentally conscious choices that align with our mission of fostering curiosity and understanding of the natural world.

Exploring Bioplastics: A Curiosity at Home Activity

Looking for an eco-friendly DIY project that ties into our education programs? Dive into the world of bioplastics—a sustainable alternative to traditional plastics, crafted from renewable sources like plant starch or animal protein. With just milk and vinegar from your kitchen, and adult support for stovetop use, you can create your own moldable material.

By experimenting with bioplastics, learners not only have fun but also engage with sustainable solutions to plastic pollution. Join us in this fascinating eco-friendly endeavor, showcasing how our education initiatives promote sustainability. Together, let’s make a difference—one homemade creation at a time. Ideal for learners in grades Kindergarten to 8th.

Happy experimenting!

Three signs in the Pollinator Path

Honoring Traditional Ecological Knowledge in Exhibits

At PacSci, we recognize the importance of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) in understanding our interconnectedness with nature. TEK refers to the wisdom and practices passed down through generations within Indigenous communities, guiding their understanding of the natural world and their role within it.

Our Pollinator Path exhibit not only showcases the intricate relationships between plants, animals, and humans but also highlights Indigenous approaches to stewardship.

Indigenous stories provide ‘original instructions’ for how to care for and relate to the land; the nature of reciprocity, exemplified by our relationship to plants [and animals]. Dr. Cajete (Santa Clara Pueblo)

Sustainable Concessions at IMAX® Theaters

When you indulge in treats at PacSci’s IMAX Theaters, you’re also supporting sustainability. Our concessions operation is committed to minimizing environmental impact by using sustainable, single-use alternatives. From straws to containers, we opt for eco-friendly options whenever possible.

We’re proud to have made the switch to SmartWater in aluminum cans, reducing plastic waste and promoting recycling. And our commitment doesn’t stop there; we’re exploring ethically and sustainably sourced food options for future concessions, ensuring that every bite aligns with our values.

Electric Transportation for Outreach Visits

Our dedication to sustainability extends beyond our walls and into our transportation practices. With our new electric Science on Wheels vans, we prioritize local travel with minimal emissions. Half of the Science on Wheels van fleet is now a hybrid or fully electric vehicle.

When it comes to sustainability, every detail matters—our educators even repurpose materials to minimize waste, embodying our commitment of resourcefulness and innovation.

Innovative Recycling in Makerspace

In our Tinker Tank Makerspace, sustainability meets education as we inspire young minds to become critical thinkers and environmental stewards. Through hands-on activities like the Bug Hotel project, we not only teach children about sustainability but also lead by example.

We prioritize compostable and recycled materials, sourcing donations to minimize our reliance on new plastics. Every activity is an opportunity to learn and grow, both for the youth and for our commitment to sustainability.

Energy Efficiency on campus

Perhaps most crucially, we’re dedicated to reducing our energy footprint through innovative initiatives and continuous improvements.

From upgrading HVAC systems to installing solar panels, from LED lighting to advanced controls, we’re harnessing technology to maximize efficiency. Compliance with city and state regulations is not just a mandate; it’s a shared commitment to a sustainable future.

With every upgrade and initiative, we move closer to our goal of net-zero emissions by 2050, demonstrating our unwavering dedication to the planet we call home.

Happy Earth Day!

As we celebrate Earth Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to sustainability, not just today, but every day. At PacSci, sustainability isn’t just a goal—it’s our way of life.

We strive to be at the forefront of sustainable practices, constantly seeking to grow and evolve as an organization. Join us in honoring the Earth and all its wonders, today and every day. Together, we can make a difference—one eco-friendly choice at a time.
