60 Minutes in Space: Journey to the Asteroid Belt

July 22, 6:45 p.m. - 7:45 p.m.
Star constellations projected on a planetarium ceiling

Join PacSci for a virtual adventure through the asteroid belt! Explore what makes an asteroid an asteroid and uncover the fascinating science behind these rocky remnants of our early solar system. Learn how studying asteroids helps scientists piece together the history of planetary formation and what we hope to uncover through missions that journey up close to explore them in detail.

We’ll be joined by Crystal Kaya, a NASA Solar System Ambassador, who will share insights into the groundbreaking Psyche mission—NASA’s journey to a one-of-a-kind, metal-rich asteroid that could hold clues to the building blocks of planets.

All ages are welcome; due to the nature of the presentation, the event is recommended for ages 5 and up.

Schedule

  • Zoom Meeting Opens: 6:30 p.m.

About the Speaker

Crystal Kaya

Crystal’s journey into the realm of astronomy and space exploration is a story of lifelong passion, deeply rooted in the starlit memories she shared with her dad. From a young age, under the vast canopy of the night sky, she and her dad shared an enthusiasm for the cosmos that ignited a profound love for space—one that continues to shape her life today.

As a board member of her local Astronomical Society and a volunteer planetarium presenter, Crystal embraces the joy of fostering a community bonded by a shared fascination with the universe. Outside of formal events, she can often be found on the rooftop deck of her Seattle home, telescope in hand, exploring the celestial wonders above.

Crystal loves helping others lean into their own sense of wonder and curiosity, encouraging them to look up and connect with the infinite expanse above. She believes that a love for space, once kindled, can light up a path of exploration, discovery, and lifelong inspiration.
