60 Minutes in Space: Planetary Science in Action

February 26, 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
60 minutes in space member-exclusive event

Join PacSci for a virtual exploration of Earth science beyond our planet and the engineering tools that make discovery possible. From the Apollo missions and moonquakes to modern missions studying Mars, learn how specially engineered technologies collect the data scientists need to uncover the hidden structures of other worlds.

This program is open to all ages. Due to the nature of the presentation, it is recommended best for ages 10 and up.

This show will also feature a guest speaker, Todd Lau, who will share how geophysics here on Earth helps prepare astronauts for exploration on other planets.

About the speaker

Todd Lau

Todd Lau

Todd Lau is a geophysicist working with the Earthquakes and Geophysics group at the Washington Geological Survey (WGS), where he has worked for the past 10 years. He uses airborne and ground-based geophysical methods to map faults, study structural geology, and assess mineral resource potential across Washington State. His work combines field data collection, advanced analysis, and subsurface modeling to better understand the ground beneath our feet, with professional interests spanning geologic hazards, remote sensing, mineralogy, and planetary science.

About Washington Geological Survey

WGS is a team of geologists, geophysicists, and other specialists dedicated to collecting, developing, and sharing geologic information to promote public safety, protect the environment, and support Washington’s economy. Their work includes mapping surface and subsurface geology, assessing seismic and landslide hazards, modeling tsunamis, and producing data, maps, and publications that help communities and decision-makers across the state.
