Meet The Team: Exhibits

The Exhibits Team at Pacific Science Center is vital to achieving our core mission. The team helps develop, design, fabricate, and maintain exhibits that spark curiosity and foster a love for learning among visitors of all ages.

What Does the Exhibits Team Do?

The Exhibits Team plays a crucial role in creating the PacSci visitor experience.

Their work encompasses everything visitors see, feel, hear, touch, and play with on our exhibit floor. They work hard to create and maintain experiences that inspire curiosity in all who come through our doors.

Upcoming Projects

Currently, the team is hard at work building the upcoming Brainy Bodies exhibit. This brand-new exhibit will open soon in December 2024. Brainy Bodies is an exploration of how we all experience the world differently because of our unique brains and bodies. The team is especially proud of the interactive displays that simplify complex neuroscience concepts, making them accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

Keep your eye out for future updates and events for our new exhibit!

Exhibit Design Camp at PacSci

This summer, the team also presented multiple times at the Exhibit Design Camp at Camp for Curious Minds.

They shared insights about their exhibit design process, emphasizing the importance of creating exhibits that cater to all visitors.

Engaging with campers, they answered questions and encouraged budding designers to think about inclusivity and accessibility in their own projects.

If you’re interested in exploring the world of exhibit design, be sure to sign up for next summer’s camp at PacSci! It’s a unique opportunity to learn from experts and unleash your creativity.

Maintenance and Sustainability

Alongside developing new projects, the team ensures that existing exhibits are well-maintained and functional.

They conduct regular inspections and repairs to keep the interactive elements running smoothly, guaranteeing a consistent and enjoyable experience for all visitors.

Sustainability is a core value for the team. They prioritize eco-friendly materials and strive to build durable exhibits that minimize environmental impact.

Commitment to Inclusivity

Inclusivity is equally important to the team; they actively seek input from diverse communities to ensure that all visitors feel represented and welcome.

By embracing these principles, they create a richer experience that resonates with a wide audience.

Meet the Team!

While this isn’t the entire Exhibits Team, we want to share insights from some of the team members who contribute to our mission.

Let’s hear from them!

Stephanie Delancey

Stephanie D. (she/her), Senior Manager of Exhibit Design and Operations

With a background in learning theory and architecture, Stephanie is leading the Brainy Bodies exhibit, the first major project designed in-house by her team.

She believes in the transformative power of learning and creating exhibits that make science accessible for all learners through the use of inclusive design practices.

Outside of work, she enjoys family time, fiction writing, photography, and home renovations. Stephanie values her team’s collaborative spirit and their positive impact at PacSci.

Sami P

Sami P. (she/her), Exhibit Designer

Say hello to Sami, the creative force behind some of the exhibits at PacSci! With a background in architecture and commercial art, Sami stumbled into exhibit design and never looked back. She loves the thrill of crafting unforgettable experiences that make science fun for everyone.

If Sami had the chance to design an exhibit on anything she wanted, she’d zoom in on the quantum scale of the universe. She imagines interactive displays that make the complex physics of tiny particles accessible and captivating.

Sami’s commitment to sustainability shines through in her design approach. She loves collaborating with local vendors and finding innovative ways to reuse, reduce, and recycle materials.

When she’s not designing at PacSci, Sami enjoys crafting frame-by-frame animations and hanging out with her beloved cats. Sami loves the supportive structure of her team, which helps turn creative ideas into reality.

Cailee Smith

Cailee S. (she/her), Exhibit Developer

Cailee is driven by her lifelong passion for wildlife and informal science education. She focuses on making all types of science exciting and approachable for everyone through exhibits.

Cailee is currently working on the Brainy Bodies project, updating human physiology exhibits to ensure they are accessible to diverse audiences. She loves creating hands-on science tools, like microscopes paired with butterfly wings, to encourage everyone to practice science skills as part of their PacSci visit.

If she could design any exhibit, it would explore senses in animals—such as how cats hear or how bees see ultraviolet light. She admires shark biologist Greg Skomal for his work in changing perceptions about sharks and incorporates sustainability by telling compelling conservation stories about the Pacific Northwest.

In her free time, Cailee enjoys nature, hiking, and indulging in her love for croissants and donuts. She’s also a winter sports enthusiast eager to return to curling and ice skating.

Caelan Johnson

Caelan J. (he/him), Exhibit Operations Supervisor

His passion for the outdoors and tinkering with toys led him to study environmental science and later carpentry. He enjoys merging his interests in science and hands-on work. At PacSci, he collaborates with contractors on the production and fabrication of interactives.

If he could design any exhibit, it would explore giant monsters through physics, emphasizing experimentation rather than simple signage. For Caelan, making science accessible and fun involves creating engaging user experiences that naturally lead to learning.

In his free time, Caelan enjoys tinkering, fixing a 40-year-old car, and learning new skills. He appreciates the challenges of his job, where he uses woodworking, welding, and plastics.

Devin U

Devin U. (he/him), Exhibit Technician

Inspired by a childhood exhibit featuring dinosaur toys in a sandbox, Devin studied archaeology in college and graduate school. He also served as a national park guide in Washington, D.C., where he honed his storytelling skills and discovered the power of public communication.

If he could design any exhibit, it would focus on the history of anti-racism, particularly self-emancipated communities like those in the Great Dismal Swamp. Devin believes it’s essential to showcase diverse voices and incorporates this perspective into his projects.

In his free time, Devin enjoys playing music and exploring the outdoors through hiking and scuba diving. He values PacSci’s mission and appreciates the opportunity to be creative and problem-solve within the exhibits team.

Oliver N

Oliver N. (he/him), Exhibit Technician

With a degree in interaction design from the University of Washington, he thrives on creating engaging experiences, from designing signs to crafting electronic musical instruments.

Currently, Oliver is focused on the upcoming Brainy Bodies exhibit, set to launch in December. He’s excited about a project that illustrates how the brain communicates with the body, working with physical interfaces to create unique interactive experiences.

If given the chance, Oliver admires and would love to meet Dan Shiffman of The Coding Train for his beginner-friendly approach to programming and commitment to diversity in tech.

Outside of work, Oliver enjoys writing and producing music with his band. He recently submitted his original project, SlimeFacts, for the Seattle Design Festival, reflecting his creative spirit and passion for sharing science in fun, accessible ways.

A Bright Future Ahead

The Exhibits Team at Pacific Science Center is dedicated to creating interactive and memorable experiences that ignite curiosity and foster a love for science.

Through innovative projects like the Brainy Bodies exhibit and a commitment to sustainability and inclusivity, they are shaping the future of informal science education.

Together, they are not just building exhibits; they are building a community where science is accessible and exciting for everyone.
