Laser Dome Turns 50

Pacific Science Center is celebrating a milestone: 50 years of our Laser Dome.

For half a century, this unique theater has been a place to lie back, look up, and let yourself get completely immersed in sound and light. Now, we’re inviting you to help us mark the occasion with a month of unforgettable shows, exclusive merch, and a birthday bash unlike any other.

A One-of-a-Kind Experience, Then and Now

The Dome was Initially built for 1962 World’s Fair as the Spacarium, it became known as, and a venue for, Laserium in August 1975.

The structure itself was designed by visionary architect Buckminster Fuller, who imagined a massive geodesic dome that could hold immersive experiences unlike anything else in the world.

What began as a place for early laser shows quickly evolved into something bigger. It became a stage for creativity, experimentation, and full-sensory storytelling.

Today, the Laser Dome still feels like something out of the future. Its 76-foot-wide dome is made up of five triangular panels, with every punched aluminum tile perfectly lined up so that the structure appears seamless.

Fun Fact: The dome hangs from the ceiling, and if you stand a few steps down from the middle walkway, you’ll hear your own voice echo back, like you’re in surround sound.

What makes the Laser Dome experience truly unique is the way each show is brought to life. A laser artist runs the visuals live, adjusting them based on the mood in the room. They watch the crowd, respond in real time, and shape the show moment by moment. It’s not just a performance. It’s a conversation between the artist and the audience.

While there’s traditional seating, many longtime visitors skip the chairs entirely. They bring blankets and pillows, then find a spot on the floor, lie back, and take in the full dome overhead. The sound, the color, the movement—it all comes together in a way that’s hard to describe until you’ve been there yourself.

Over the years, the Dome has welcomed more than just curious guests. Local band The Divorce has performed here, along with acts like Alice in Chains and Grizzly Bear. Lenny Kravitz and Wale have paid a visit, and even Pink Floyd’s drummer Nick Mason stopped by. The Dome has also hosted album release parties, including Radiohead’s Kid A and Sleater-Kinney’s The Center Won’t Hold.

It’s more than a venue, it’s part of Seattle’s cultural memories.

A Lineup 50 Years in the Making

To celebrate the Dome’s 50th birthday—officially August 28—we’re throwing a party that lasts all month long. The lineup features some of our most iconic laser shows, brand-new themes, and a few surprises you’ll have to see to believe.

Fridays and Saturdays are packed with fan favorites like Daft Punk, Tame Impala, and Lorde, with late-night showings of Tyler, the Creator, Frank Ocean, and Pink Floyd’s The Wall.

Sundays are all about the Pacific Northwest, with a series dedicated to legendary local artists including Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, Sleater-Kinney, Pearl Jam, Odesza, and The Postal Service.

Midweek shows explore music by decade, with Wednesdays and Thursdays taking you through the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, 2000s, and 2010s. The lineup spans everything from ABBA to Outkast, Beyoncé, and Metallica, offering a mix of decades and styles to suit every musical taste.

On August 28, we’ll throw our official birthday bash with a special live laser show and more ways to celebrate the Dome’s legacy.
