Pacific Science Center offers a variety of programs for families and groups at Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center. Click the links below to learn more.

Nature Club

Do you have a group of students who like to explore the outdoors while pursuing scientific field investigations of the natural world? What about canoeing in search of wildlife?

If so, call to arrange your very own Nature Club at Mercer Slough!

Our environmental science educators will engage your group with hands-on activities, experiments, hikes, crafts and educational games.

  • Who: Groups of 6 or more, including homeschoolers, students, scouts, youth groups, friends and more!
  • Ages: 6-12
  • Sessions: We facilitate 8-week sessions by request for groups of 6 or more youth.
  • Themes: Nature Club session themes can include animals, plants, observation and nature journaling, ecosystems, nature art and wetland science.
  • Time: 2 hours one day per week for 8 weeks, offered weekdays and Saturdays throughout the school year.
  • Cost: $155 per participant, or $145 for Pacific Science Center members

Wild B'earthdays

Celebrate your birthday in the wild. Explore the wetlands, play ecology games, and then celebrate your party amidst the tree tops in our facility. Wild' B'earthday parties are offered on Saturdays from mid-September to early June. Choose from the following themes:

Bug Safari (5 years and older)

Explore the world of insects with bug boxes and magnifying glasses, play ecology games and seek out tiny creatures as you hike through the Slough.

Animal Mania (5 years and older)

Play various animal games, take home an animal track and hike the Slough in search of animal signs.

GPS Scavenger Hunt (8 years and older, max. 15 kids)

Learn how compasses and GPS devices work. Then with a GPS receiver in hand, follow the clues as you search out the coordinates on a GPS Scavenger Hunt.

We head out rain or shine but will include some indoor activities if inclement weather clouds your b'day.

$200 ($190 for Pacific Science Center members) for 15 children
$280 ($270 for Pacific Science Center members) for 25 children

Party Package includes: 1.5 hour guided hike, a bug box, plaster animal track or compass clip (depends on theme), invitations, room usage for 1 hour PLUS thematic room decorations, table cloths, plates, cups, forks and napkins. Just bring the food and drinks!

Scouts in the Wild

Explore the forest and wetland habitats of the Mercer Slough Nature Park while working towards a nature-related scouting badge. Badges are not supplied for this program. Join in scavenger hunts, games, experiments and more. Scouts in the Wild is offered weekdays after school and on Saturdays from mid-September to early June.

  • Ages: 5 - 12 years old
  • Length: 2 hours

Family Outings: Night Walk

Start off the evening in the lab examining skulls and conducting experiments to discover the tricks nocturnal creatures use to survive at night. Then head out into the dark to call owls, listen for nocturnal creatures and participate in hands-on sensory activities.

Time: 7-9 p.m.
Cost: $15 per person
Ages: Designed for families with children ages 5-12

Family Outings: Twilight Science

Join us for an exciting evening of science with your family. We will engage in fun activities while we learn about water chemistry, plants and local animals.
 
April 25: Searching for Spring
The seasons are changing! the days are longer, the air is feeling warmer and the plants are starting to grow. Come investigate what causes the changing seasons, and how these changes affect the plants at Mercer Slough. Smell and feel the soil of the wetland as you bounce in the bog. Identify the new spring growth on wetland plants and hunt for other signs of spring on a walk through the Slough with your family.
 
May 23: Amazing Amphibians!
Do all frogs come from polliwogs? What's the difference between a newt and a salamander? Answer these questions and more as you hunt through the wetland for amphibians. Investigate amphibian adaptations for living in a wetland and act out their life cycle in an active metamorphosis game. Compare your own senses to those of a frog as you listen and look for these amazing wetland animals.

Time: 7-9 p.m.

Ages: Designed for families with children ages 5-12
